BHUBANESWAR: A visiting team of Ramsar Convention, an
international treaty for the conservation and sustainable utilization of
wetlands, on Tuesday felt Chilika is emerging as a global example for its
successful livelihood model and ecosystem. It was of the view that other
wetlands in the world should replicate the Chilika model.
"The
scientific advisory panel of Ramsar Convention has come to see the best
practices we have introduced to sustain the lagoon's biodiversity since 2000.
The success of Chilka will form the basis for making further guidelines to
maintain wetlands all over the world,”
He said growth of fish production without disturbing the
ecosystem, development of eco-tourism and improved livelihood of the
communities dependent on the lagoon are three significant components that
impressed the Ramsar panel.
