Phulbani: The land of mystic waterfalls

Katramal Waterfalls at a height of around 95-100 feet is nestled in the hinterlands of the Phulbani forest division, about 17 kms from a little known village Katringia, seemed like a seventh heaven on the outskirts of this tribal belt. The water level was a bit low but still the neighbouring splendour of the place almost made me hold my breath for a few seconds.

Chilika to be Global Model

BHUBANESWAR: A visiting team of Ramsar Convention, an international treaty for the conservation and sustainable utilization of wetlands, on Tuesday felt Chilika is emerging as a global example for its successful livelihood model and ecosystem. It was of the view that other wetlands in the world should replicate the Chilika model.

"The scientific advisory panel of Ramsar Convention has come to see the best practices we have introduced to sustain the lagoon's biodiversity since 2000. The success of Chilka will form the basis for making further guidelines to maintain wetlands all over the world,”

He said growth of fish production without disturbing the ecosystem, development of eco-tourism and improved livelihood of the communities dependent on the lagoon are three significant components that impressed the Ramsar panel.

Cyclone Hudhud: Odisha largely spared

BHUBANESWAR: Odisha breathed easier on Sunday as Cyclone Hudhud made its landfall near Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh without causing much damage in the state. However, heavy rain and squalls in southern parts of the state created flood fears in Bansadhara, Rushikulya and Nagavali rivers.

Two Chilika Fresh Non-Veg Outlets in Bhubaneswar

BHUBANESWAR: Seafood lovers can now enjoy fresh fish, shrimp, crab and prawn from Chilika Lake as the state government has decided to set up two 'Chilika Fresh' outlets in the city.

Initially, two outlets will be opened at OUAT Square and Chandrasekharpur on a pilot basis.

"Like Udyan Fresh that has been procuring vegetables directly from farmers and selling it to general public without interference of middlemen, we have planned to help fishermen of Chilika."With this we aim to provide a proper market to the fishermen of Chilika, who will get legitimate price for their catch and secure their livelihood, while people of the city can get fresh products at a reasonable price.

According to sources, more than 317 varieties of fish, 28 types of prawns and shrimps, 35 Brachyuran crabs, of which 12 edible species, and two spiny lobsters are available in Chilika.
